Trek Description

Our Mera Peak expedition is an adventure designed for experienced trekkers seeking a physically demanding yet rewarding challenge. Located in the heart of the Khumbu region, this climbing expedition ends upon reaching the Mera Peak summit, standing tall at 6, 461 meters / 21, 198 feet.

When you join the Mera Peak climbing expedition, you will trek through remote locations, including Chuthanga, Kharki Thanga, Zatrwa-La Pass, Chatra Khola, Kothe, Thangnak, and Khare. Except for the climbers doing the Mera trek, or Baruntse climbers, there will be no other visitors. Throughout the journey to the summit and back to Lukla, you can sense the remoteness and proximity to the mountains. There are no villages along the Mera peak route after Lukla; everything is essentially a climbers’ settlement.

The Mera Peak climbing unfolds as an expedition across various universes. Your journey will begin among the brilliant greens of rhododendron woodlands, with their multicolored blooms providing a beautiful spectacle. As we ascend, the terrain transforms into tranquil valleys with breathtaking views of the neighboring mountains. The main struggle awaits you, as the path to climb Mera Peak takes you through tough terrain with rocky slopes and across glacier remnants. These sections need a great degree of physical fitness and dedication. This adventure offers a one-of-a-kind high-altitude treks and multiday glacier climbing experience.

While technical climbing abilities are not required for this climb, the Mera Peak expedition requires good physical fitness and sufficient acclimatization to the high altitude. The trail passes through a variety of environments, from rich rhododendron forests and scenic valleys to tough high-altitude glaciers. This difference in terrain ensures a complete and interesting experience for trekkers who are prepared for the challenge.

An Mera Peak tour with We Ramblers isn’t just about the challenge; it’s also a chance to witness Nepal’s rich biodiversity. The lower slopes have a vibrant display of wildflowers, while higher up, the hardier alpine plants take over. If you look carefully, you might spot some fascinating wildlife – look out for the majestic Himalayan Tahrs, the playful marmots, and the diverse bird species that call these mountains home. The presence of these creatures adds a touch of wilderness to the Mera Peak trek, making it a truly immersive experience in the heart of the Himalayas.

If you want to know the Mera Peak climbing season to plan your adventure, two windows are ideal. The pre-monsoon season, stretching from March to May, offers stable Mera Peak weather conditions with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Similarly, the post-monsoon season, running from September to November, provides clear skies and pleasant temperatures for Mera Peak trekking. With us, you will be able to book expeditions in these months and have a safe and enjoyable holiday experience.

Unlike some of the more crowded trekking routes in Nepal, our Mera Peak Expedition offers a more peaceful and personal experience. Here, you can truly appreciate the tranquility of the mountain trails. This solitude allows you to make a deeper connection with the surrounding nature and immerse yourself in the beauty of the Mera Peak Himalayas. Free from the hustle and bustle of busier treks, you can fully appreciate the serenity of the mountains and listen to the whispers of the wind.

The high-altitude glacier climbing is noticeable from the Mera peak base camp. The trekking trail terminates just a few hundred meters from the base camp, where you must rope yourself and use crampons. The initial climb is difficult for a few hundred meters, followed by moderate ups and downs across endless ice-white meadows to the high camp.

The Mera Peak high camp is an exciting location perched on the mountain’s edge, with breathtaking views all around. Be cautious in the high camp, especially at night, and use the headlamp when walking to the kitchen or toilet camp. We leave at midnight for the summit with a packed breakfast; the climb from Mera high camp to the summit is surely difficult; some sections are very steep, and you cross minor crevasses on the summit ascent; a ladder is not required now but will be required in the future. All crevasses and danger points are marked with flags. The last stretch of the top is steep and necessitates the use of an ice axe and rope. The summit Mera Peak is undeniably rewarded, with breathtaking views all around. The peak is quite chilly and windy, so be careful when removing your gloves for photographs. After the summit, it’s simple; just take caution when descending the toughest sections.

The expedition with We Ramblers is a life-changing journey. It combines the challenge of conquering Mera Peak, Nepal’s highest trekking peak, with the captivating beauty of the Khumbu region. Our unique blend promises an unforgettable adventure for those seeking an extraordinary experience in the heart of the Himalayas.

The walk from Lukla to Chuthanga is moderately difficult and takes 3 – 4 hours to complete; the majority of the trail is uphill till we arrive. During the hike, you will have a great view of the Himalayan peaks, and on your back, you will see Lukla town, which is breathtaking from the top. You will cross multiple streams today via gorgeous hanging bridges and tiny wooden bridges. Once you arrive in Chuthanga, you will check into our Tea House. Chuthanga is a small town with only one proper tea house, and the facilities are modest.

Altitude of Kharki Thanga: 3, 700 m / 11, 155 ft.
Trekking duration to Kharki Thanga: 3 hours.
Night stay: In a tea house in Kharki Thanga.

Today’s journey will be short, taking only three hours to reach our destination. The entire trek is an uphill hike until Kharki Thanga. The trail from Chuthanga appears to be infinite, as it leads to our destination via a difficult trek. Also, from below, the steep mountain appears impassable, although the hike is not too difficult. To begin, our Mera Peak climbing itinerary includes crossing a little stream using a wooden bridge. Following the creek, we will continue uphill through rhododendron forests for a long time. Kharki Thanga is situated on level ground surrounded by mountains. It’s a very tranquil and little location with few amenities; it’s the finest place to acclimate before continuing your journey. Our current accommodation is also pretty basic in this location. We’ll all sleep in one big room today because there aren’t any individual rooms.

Altitude of Chatra Khola: 4, 200 m / 13, 779 ft.
Trekking duration to Chatra Khola: 4 to 5 hours.

Once we start, the trail will be tough upward until we reach the mountain pass. The hike offers a breathtaking view of the rugged mountains. The first half of today’s trek is difficult, taking 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the top. We will spend 20 minutes on top before continuing our trek to Chatra Khola. Following the mountain crossing, we will make a modest hike to a location with stupas and prayer flags. On the way, the scenery to our right is breathtaking. A little alpine village is readily visible from a distance. After we arrive at the prayer flags, the trail continues downward till we reach Chatra Khola. There is a tiny tea shop here before you begin to descend to Chatra Khola, where you can rest and consume some hot beverages. Chatra Khola is a small town with a few tea house establishments and a helipad for emergencies.

Altitude of Kothe: 3,691 m / 12, 109 ft.
Trekking duration to Kothe: 6 to 7 hours.
Night stay: In a tea house in Kothe.

Today, we will leave early in the morning and head for Kothe. Today’s hike is moderate. The walk begins with many ups and downs, and you will cross a few tiny mountain passes. Some of the track is narrow and follows the edge of the mountains, so be extra cautious in these areas. Always follow your Mera Peak guide’s instructions. After a few hours of trekking, we cross a tiny mountain pass and then descend totally via rhododendron woods to a small place named Taktho, which has a few eateries for lunch.

After lunch, we will go through the deep forest to Kothe. We will descend to the riverbed and then trek uphill through the forest until we reach Kothe. The walk is very picturesque, and there are many large old pine trees along the way. This section of Mera Peak trek is quite nice, and as a trekker, you will appreciate the trail. We can see the Makalu Baron National Park gate immediately before entering Kothe. Kothe is a modest and charming hikers’ town with many tea houses. We will check into our Tea House upon arrival.

Altitude of Thangnak: 4, 358 m / 14, 297 ft.
Trekking duration to Thangnak: 5 to 6 hours.
Night stay: In a tea house in Thangnak.

Today’s hike is moderate until Thangnak. The majority of the trail follows the riverbank. The hike provides Mera Peak views as well as a few other mountain peaks. The first half of the journey is scenic before hitting the riverbed. Once you enter the riverbed, the majority of the trail is between rocks. After a three-hour hike, we will arrive at our lunch stop. Our lunch spot includes two little shops that serve meals to the trekkers. After lunch, we shall begin our Mera Peak trekking journey towards Thangnak. On the way, you’ll notice a lovely tiny monastery on your left. Before moving on, we will pay a visit to the monastery and receive a blessing. After the Monastery, the trail is generally flat to Thangnak. Thangnak is home to a large number of tea houses. It’s a flat riverbed below a mountain.

Altitude of Khare: 5, 045 m / 16, 486 ft.
Trekking duration to Khare: 4 to 5 hours.
Night stay: In a tea house in Khare.

Today’s walk is also moderate. On the 8th day of our Mera Peak trek, we will begin with an uphill climb and then descend to a very flat route. We receive spectacular views as we begin the hike, especially on the rise. We can see a hanging glacier on our left from the trail, which looks spectacular. You will come across a turquoise magnificent glacier lake just 100 meters from your trail. The lake is not visible from the trail, so many climbers miss it, but don’t worry, your guide will take you there. After crossing the lake, the trail is easy and leads across a flat valley to a rest stop. This resting location features a large tea house and offers a breathtaking Mera peak summit view from a close distance. After the refreshment stop, the trail goes upward for a while before gradually ascending to Khare.

Khare is a tea house (mountain lodge) town with several tea houses. This is the final spot with permanent accommodations; after this, camping is everywhere. Khare is the final permanent destination for those who come to climb Mera Peak, Baruntse Peak, and Amphu Lapcha Pass. Today is a leisure day, and we do nothing but inspect your climbing gear for the upcoming important days.

Today is an acclimatization and training day. After breakfast, we’ll proceed on an upward climb to a nearby peak, where we’ll have a magnificent view of the Mera mountain and the surrounding mountains. We’ll spend some time here admiring the gorgeous scenery before heading back to our tea house. After returning to the tea house, you put on your climbing shoes and walk to the nearby training point. You will receive basic training on how to utilize rope, jumar, harness, Carabiner Lock, Carabiner Unlock, Safety Rope, Ice Axe, and Figure 8. This training will teach you how to climb up and down using a rope. During this training season, you will spend some time at the training ground with our qualified Mera Peak trek guides, who will accompany you for the next three days while you ascend Mera Peak.

After finishing the training, you have the entire day to relax and save energy for the forthcoming climb.

Altitude of Mera Base Camp: 5, 350 m / 17, 553 ft.
Trekking duration to Mera Base Camp: 3 hours.
Night stay: In a tent at Mera Base Camp.

Today we will begin with an upward trek, then the trail will become milder for a distance, followed by many ups and downs on rocky terrain until we reach the base camp. Mera Peak is visible to your right as you approach the base camp. The base camp is located below the Mera glacier and is a large open area. The base camp is full of tents, and there are a few kitchens made of rocks that are really pleasant, especially in the evening. There isn’t much to do at the Mera Peak base camp, so you can either relax in your tent or play cards. You will find hot water, tea, and coffee in the kitchen; but, to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water. Dinner will be early today, and you will get plenty of sleep because you have nothing to do here. Always use your head torch after dark; the toilet tent is close by, and you may need to pee several times over this long night.

Altitude of Mera High Camp: 5, 780 m / 18, 958 ft.
Trekking duration to Mera High Camp: 4 hours.
Night stay: In a tent at Mera High Camp.

As soon as we wake up, we are greeted with a breathtaking panorama of the mountains as the sun begins to rise. The Mera Peak trek itinerary includes a hearty breakfast. After that, we get ready to embark on our very first glacier ascent. The snow line is only a few hundred meters away from the base camp; to get there, we will first descend a little bit and then go in between large rocks until we reach the crampon point. Before beginning our ascent of the glacier, we will prepare ourselves for the next part of the ascent by putting on crampons, as well as all of the necessary gears and ropes. As a result of the fact that this section is completely different from the other days of Mera Peak trekking, you experience a little bit of fear. The beginning of the climb is a little bit steep. Once you have negotiated the initial steep section, which is around one hundred meters in length, the trail will progressively ascend until it reaches the top of the wall.

You will notice that the opposite side of the wall is rocky once you reach the top of the wall; however, we will continue to follow the glacier trail and make our way towards the high camp. After climbing up the wall, the rest of the ascent is moderate. You will have the impression that you are hiking through a vast ski area as you make your way to Mera Peak high camp. Everywhere you look, you will see endless white meadows, and the only color you will be able to see is white until you reach the Mera high camp. A true adventure awaits you at the High Camp, which is perched on the edge of a mountain and offers a thrilling experience. Next, once you have arrived at the high camp, you will enter your tent and rest in preparation for the final ascent. Due to the proximity of the kitchen tent to you, you can stop by for a cup of hot tea or coffee. Additionally, you have the option of eating your meals either inside the kitchen or in your tent.

In order to get ready for the final ascent, we will have our dinner early today, right after the sun goes down, and we will also go to bed early because we have to get up at midnight. Do not pass up the opportunity to witness an amazing sunset from the Mera Peak high camp.

Altitude of Mera Peak Summit: 6, 461 m / 21, 1907 ft.
Trekking duration to Summit: 4 to 6 hours.
Descend to Khare via High Camp: 4 to 5 hours.
Night stay: In a tea house at Khare.

The first portion of the walk is a bit mild, but after that, it grows steep till you reach an edge. Just before you reach the edge, the steepness increases to a point where you need to be extremely careful and follow your Mera Peak tour guide. The final ascent to the edge is a challenging one; after you reach the ridge, you will take a break before continuing on with your quest.

After crossing the ridge, the pathway is moderate and appears to go on forever. However, in reality, it is not very long because you get fatigued and walking at this altitude is absolutely difficult, so the path appears to go on forever. We are going to cross a small crevasse after we have passed the edge, and it is completely risk-free.
After what seems like an eternity, we will finally arrive at a level ground before beginning our final climb to the Mera peak. Following a brief period of resting here, we will then begin our final ascent to the peak of Mera, which is the highest point in the area. The distance from the resting location is not too large; however, the path is steep until it reaches the summit. The final step is a little bit difficult because you have to climb to the very edge of the path in order to reach the top. At the Mera Peak summit, which is fairly broad, there are a great number of prayer flags. The summit of Mera Peak offers incredible panoramas of the five highest mountain peaks on the earth, in addition to a number of other enormous mountain peaks around the region.

Take care when capturing images and videos because you won’t be able to keep your bare hands in this freezing and windy environment for long. After some time at the summit, we will begin our return journey. Don’t forget to take photos and films before beginning your descent, because the Mera Peak tour is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, and you don’t want to miss out on any of it. You must also provide photographic documentation in order to obtain your summit certificate from the Nepal Mountaineering Association; unless your summit is correctly verified, the certificate will not be issued. And receiving your summit certificate is critical because it serves as proof of climbing and allows you to climb any of Nepal’s 8000-meter mountains.

Descending from the peak is straightforward, but caution is essential when navigating the edge of the summit; beyond that point, everything is ideal. After reaching the leveled area, we will enjoy our packed breakfast before starting our return journey to Mera High Camp. Once more, you need to exercise some caution while descending from the second ridge; after that, the path becomes straightforward all the way to the High Camp. Enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee at the high camp before beginning the final descent to the base camp. The descent to the Mera base camp is straightforward; just exercise a bit of caution while making your way down to the endpoint. Once we cross the snowline, we will take off our crampons and begin the rather simple descent to Khare.

Upon arriving at your tea house in Khare, you should return all your gear to the guide, after which you will have the day to yourself. You may take a moment to relax in your room prior to the grand celebration.

Travel Duration: 35 minutes by flight (if flight is operational from Ramechhap then you must travel by road to Kathmandu from Ramechhap and it takes 4.5 hours).
